Where exactly is Conga?
On Calle Rosa, at the Cocles end of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, tucked away off the main road. The village, its restaurants and the surf beach at Playa Cocles are all within walking distance.
Some maps and apps still show the old name, Hotel Blue Conga, at this spot. It’s us: Blue Conga no longer exists, and Conga Boutique Hotel is a new hotel after a complete remodel. For navigation, use the GPS pin above.
Walking times are map estimates at an average pace. Much of the coast road has no sidewalk, so carry a light after dark.

How do I get here from San José airport (SJO)?
Private transfer. The easiest way: ask our team about a private transfer from SJO. See our routes and prices on the transfers page.
By car. It’s about 233 km: Route 32 across Braulio Carrillo National Park to Limón, then south along the coast through Cahuita and Hone Creek. Plan 4½ to 5½ hours with a stop. Route 32 sometimes closes after heavy rain in the Zurquí sector, so check road conditions (MOPT or Waze) before you set off.
Shared shuttle. Shared shuttles run from San José, the airport area and La Fortuna. Book ahead directly with the operator; some routes only run with a minimum number of passengers.
Public bus. MEPE buses leave San José’s Terminal Atlántico Norte (Avenida 9, Calle 12) for Puerto Viejo at 6, 8 and 10 am and at 2 and 4 pm, a ride of about 4½ hours (MEPE timetable, September 2026; confirm before you travel). From the town center, Conga is about a 15-minute walk.
Can I come from Liberia, Limón or Bocas del Toro?
From Liberia (LIR). It’s about 436 km by road, some 7 h 40 without traffic. Plan it as a full travel day.
By plane to Limón (LIO). SANSA flies daily between San José (SJO) and Limón, a flight of about 40 minutes. From Limón airport it’s about 55 km, a little over an hour by road; arrange your taxi or transfer in advance.
From Bocas del Toro, Panama. The usual route is a boat to Almirante, the road to Guabito, the Sixaola–Guabito bridge on foot, then about 35 minutes by road to Puerto Viejo. There’s no ATM at the Sixaola border; confirm the border’s opening hours before you travel. We also offer a shared shuttle to Bocas del Toro.
How do I get around?
On foot. Town is about 15 minutes away and Playa Cocles about 13.
By bike. The coast road from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo is compact and mostly flat, and many visitors cycle to the Jaguar Rescue Center. The road is narrow and busy, so ride carefully and use lights after dark.
By bus. The local MEPE line between Limón and Manzanillo stops in Puerto Viejo, Cocles, Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva. It isn’t very frequent, so check times locally.
Taxis and tuk-tuks. Official taxis are red, and most aren’t metered, so agree on the fare before you set off. Tuk-tuks run around town too. Our guest guide lists a tuk-tuk service and a bike rental nearby; ask at reception. More tips in Getting around Puerto Viejo.

How far is Conga from Playa Cocles and the town center?
The north end of Playa Cocles is about 13 minutes on foot (0.7 km), and the center of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca about 15 minutes (1.1 km). Salsa Brava, the reef break in town, is about 10 minutes’ walk. By bike, town is roughly 6 minutes away.
Do I need a car to stay at Conga?
Not for town or Playa Cocles: both are within walking distance. For beaches farther south, such as Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo, you can cycle or take the local bus, a taxi or a tuk-tuk, and several of the tours we arrange include transportation. For day trips to Cahuita or Limón on your own schedule, a car gives you more freedom.
