Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a lovely honeymoon choice for couples who want a slower, more local Caribbean than a resort: reef-calm beaches like Punta Uva, Afro-Caribbean cooking, wildlife in the trees and warm, easy evenings on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast. Go in September or October for the driest weather, and base yourselves where you can walk to dinner.
Is Puerto Viejo good for a honeymoon?
Yes, if your idea of romance is barefoot rather than black-tie. The appeal is the combination: jungle and reef in one day, food with real roots, small places to stay, and a town you can explore on foot or by bike.
It’s worth being honest about what it isn’t. There are no private resort beaches here; the beaches are public and wild, and some, like Playa Cocles, have strong rip currents. It rains in every month, so build in a slow day or two.
When should you go?
September and October are the driest months on this coast, with about 149 and 159 mm of rain on average, against 482 mm in July. February and March are the next-best bet. If turtles are part of the dream, leatherbacks nest at Gandoca from February or March to July, peaking in April and May; if culture is, come in August or for the Limón Carnival around 12 October. - Swim at Punta Uva on a calm morning, in reef-protected turquoise water beside a natural rock arch.
- Walk Playa Negra at sunset, the black-sand beach that runs from town toward Cahuita.

How do you get to Puerto Viejo?
Plan on a travel day. The drive from San José’s Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) is 233 km and takes about 4.5 to 5.5 hours, mostly on Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park, which can close for hours after heavy rain. A private transfer is the easiest way to arrive together and unhurried; ours on the SJO route is listed at US$275, about 5 hours. Can you combine Puerto Viejo with Tortuguero, Arenal or Bocas?
Yes, and each adds something different.
- Arenal (La Fortuna): the volcano, natural hot springs and rainforest adventures. Our private transfer on this route is listed at US$375, about 5 hours, so it pairs well with a Caribbean finish.
